Mouth of Truth!

Colloquially known as the “Mouth of Truth”, the Bocca Della Verita is located in the portico of the church of Santa Maria, in Cosmedin. Thought to be part of an ancient fountain or a manhole cover carved as early as the first century, the Bocca Della Verita was placed in its current location in the 17th century. The most memorable factor of the face is the myth that it is a judger of truth. Legend has it that if you have your hand in the Mouth of Truth while you tell a lie, your hand is bitten off.

Simply a round piece of marble that was once part of an ancient fountain, or possibly an ancient manhole cover, the Bocca della Verità (Mouth of Truth) is one of Rome’s most popular curiosities.

The mouth lives in the portico of the Chiesa di Santa Maria in Cosmedin, which is one of Rome’s most beautiful medieval churches. Originally built in the 8th century, the church was given a major revamp in the 12th century, when the seven-storey bell tower and portico were added and the floor was decorated with Cosmati inlaid marble.
