MAXXI National Museum of Art

Italy is mainly mountainous, except for the Po plain in the north, and runs from the Alps to the central Mediterranean Sea. It includes the islands of Sicily, Sardinia, Elba and about 70 other smaller ones. There are two small independent states within peninsular Italy: the Vatican City in Rome, and the Republic of San Marino. MAXXI is the National Museum of Art of the 21st Century, is Rome’s contribution to contemporary art of Italy, and the first Italian museum dedicated to the art of today. With Chinese art critic Hou Hanru at the helm as Museum Director, MAXXI saw its highest number of visitors (300,000) in the year 2013.

The structure itself, designed by Iraqi architect,Zaha Hadid, is a monumental 290,626 sq ft. Lying in Rome’s Flaminio Quarter, the space was originally a complex of military offices, but by now it is, in its own right, a work of art. The museum was conceived as a space for excellence in contemporary creativity. Managed by the Foundation that was established by the Italian Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities in 2009, the MAXXI is dedicated to experimentation and innovation in arts and architecture.
