Away from the hustle and bustle of Rome lies a park that is dedicated to monsters. Known locally and rather appropriately as the Park of the Monsters, is the Sacred Grove, a garden not far from Viterbo in Bomarzo which is flaunting with monstrous sculptures.
The park of Monsters of Bomarzo was devised by the architect Pirro Ligorio on commision of Prince Pier Francesco Orsini, called Vicino, only to vent the heart broken at the death of is wife Giulia Farnese. The park was born in 1552 as “Villa of Wonders” to be the only one of it’s kind in the world.
The Park of Monsters remained in oblivion till 1954 when it was bought by Mr Giovanni Bettini who with loving care has managed it. A visit to the park will unfold in a series of stages ranging between mythology and fantasy.
It is an amazing experience to visit this park and children would enjoy the visit to the core.
The park of Monsters is at Località Giardino at Bomarzo, Viterbo, Italy. The area surrounding Monster Park is interesting too – there’s Viterbo down the road, as are the great Renaissance gardens at Villa Farnese and Villa Lante. Also not too far away from Bomarzoare the lakes of Barcciano, Trasimeno, Vico and Bolsena, nor is the tranquil Maremma area of Tuscany.
The Monsters Park is around an hour’s drive from Rome and it is advisable to hire a car to reach the place as one may find it hasslesome to use the public transport to visit this place.
