IMPORTANT INFORMATION REGARDING FOREIGN DRIVERS IN ITALY

AT TIME OF RENTAL THE DRIVER MUST PRESENT A VALID NATIONAL DRIVERS LICENSE WHICH
HAS BEEN HELD FOR AT LEAST 1 YEAR. IT IS HIGHLY RECOMMENDED THAT ALL RENTERS
OBTAIN AN INTERNATIONAL DRIVERS PERMIT IN THEIR COUNTY OF ORIGIN AND PRESENT IT
ALONG WITH THEIR DRIVERS LICENSE AT THE TIME OF RENTAL.

IF THE NATIONAL LICENCE IS NOT IN A ROMAN/LATIN SCRIPT AN INTERNATIONAL DRIVERS
PERMIT (IDP) IS REQUIRED AND ACTS AS A TRANSLATION OF ORIGINAL LICENSE. HOWEVER
THE ORIGINAL LICENSE ABSOLUTELY MUST ACCOMPANY THE IDP.

FOR NON-EU RENTERS, IT IS MANDATORY BY ITALIAN LAWS TO PROVIDE AN INTERNATIONAL
DRIVERS PERMIT (IDP) ALONG WITH THE DRIVING LICENSE. THE ONLY EXCEPTIONS
PERMITTED BY HERTZ ARE FOR CITIZENS COMING FROM AND HOLDING VALID DRIVERS
LICENSES THE FOLLOWING COUNTRIES:

ARGENTINA
AUSTRALIA
BOLIVIA
BRAZIL
CANADA
COLOMBIA
ISRAEL
MEXICO
NEW ZEALAND
SOUTH AFRICA
USA

THESE CITIZENS CAN RENT WITH ONLY THEIR LOCAL DRIVING LICENSE AND PASSPORT.
HOWEVER IT IS ALWAYS RECOMMENDED THAT YOU OBTAIN AN INTERNATIONAL DRIVERS
PERMIT. IN THESE CASES, RENTERS ARE ALSO ADVISED THAT IF THEY MAY BE STOPPED BY
THE LOCAL ITALIAN POLICE, THEY MAY RECEIVE A FINE FOR THE LACK OF THE IDP (UNLIKELY
BUT POSSIBLE) AND THE HERTZ RENTAL CAR SEIZED FOR UP TO 3 MONTHS IN WHICH CASE
HERTZ WILL CHARGE ALL APPLICABLE FEES.
