Archeological Excavations in Florence

Along with the numerous churches in Florence, there are a few interesting places to visit that will leave you in awe. Visiting the baptistery is an unforgettable experience. The current baptistery was erected in the 11th century; the octagon shaped baptistery contains astrological and astronomical architectural and artistic elements, in addition to the Christian artwork. It was once believed that an original temple to a Roman god occupied the same site, however; there is no evidence to support this theory.

Archeological excavations in Florence indicate that at least two other baptisteries were built upon the same site, prior to the present day edifice. In 1330, Leonardo d’Avanzano cast the bronze doors. He used 20 bronze panels to depict the life of John the Baptist. Consisting of 28 panels, the last lower eight panels depict the eight Christian virtues.

The original bronze panels have been replaced with reproductions. In order to preserve the original panels, they were moved to Museo dell’Opera del Duomo. Today, the doors are known as the “Gates of Paradise.” The interior flooring, installed during the 13th century is a complicated mosaic pattern. The interior pillars and walls contain astrological symbols. This may be an indication that the baptistery also served as an astronomical observatory. The overhead ceiling has depictions of Judgment Day, the Resurrection and Damnation. In fact, the ceiling is a well thought out geometrical plan containing panels of other biblical events. The baptistery is a showcase of renaissance art.
