Agrigento – Valle Dei Templi

Agrigento is a hilltop city on Sicily’s southwest shore. It was founded as a Greek colony in the 6th century B.C. and became one of the leading cities in the Mediterranean world. It is known for the Valley of the Temples, a vast archaeological site with well-preserved Greek temples and the ruins of the ancient city of Akragas.

Valle dei templi or the Valley of Temples is a large area with an excavation site full of unique remains of ancient temples. There are many like the Temple of Heracles, of Goddess Demetra, of Hefaistos, and the Temple of Concord. But the most famous temple in the Valley is the Temple of Zeus.

This was supposed to be the biggest temple of all times but it was never finished. But still, you can admire the Atlantes – statues of muscular men used as pillars which are typical for Greek architecture. It’s also important to say that all the temples in this area belong to UNESCO heritage.Once you’re there, don’t forget to visit the nearby city of Porto Empedocle. This charming seaside city has beautiful, long sand beaches that create an amazing coast. Porto Empedocle is stunning especially at night, and it’s a perfect place for a peaceful seaside vacation.
